Mod-Rocker Installation Instructions

Thank you for purchasing the Mod-Rocker Kit. To insure optimum performance and durability you must read the following instructions thoroughly. If you need any further information or assistance please contact us at (215) 257-3724.

Special Tools Required

(1) 3/8 - 12 point ¼ swivel socket

(1) 1/8 T- handle allen head wrench w/ ball end

(1) inch-lb torque wrench

Verify all required parts are included in kit.

(16) roller followers

(16) adjusters (assembled in roller follower)

(16) adjuster nuts (assembled in roller follower)

(16) solid lifters

Start by removing adjuster nuts and adjusters from roller follower. (They only come out from the bottom side.) Soak the roller follower in good grade 30w oil synthetic or non-synthetic for 1 hour. Reinstall adjusters and nuts.

1.) Remove valve covers and any associated items that will interfere with you gaining access to the valvetrain. (throttle bodies, air inlet tubes, etc.)

2.) Remove spark plugs.

3.) Remove original followers (rockers) per Ford service manual instructions. This is most easily accomplished with the Ford service tools that compress the valve spring. Always remove follower when the cam is on base circle (0 valve lift).

4.) Remove original lifter and install solid lifter supplied in the kit, these lifters have a tighter tolerance than the original equipment and may require very light tapping to install.

5.) It is suggested that you replace the original follower and lifter with the new roller follower and lifter one at a time.

6.) To install the roller follower start by making sure the threads on the adjuster are well lubed with moly lube (they come supplied this way). Back the adjuster all the way out and install in head. Some engines require a slight depression of the valve spring depending on conditions (valve stem length, base circle diameter of cam).

7.) Make an initial adjustment on follower by rotating the adjuster until you achieve 0 lash (no clearance between camshaft lobe and follower wheel). While not going to far and holding the valve open. Then back adjuster off ¼ turn and snug locknut. This adjustment will give you approx. .004- .007 clearance between camshaft lobe and follower wheel.

**Refer to Fig. 1**

8.) Continue with this procedure by rotating engine until all followers and lifters have been installed.

9.) Check adjustment nut to cam lobe clearance. Minimum clearance should be .040 thousands.

**Refer to Fig. 2**

10.) After all followers and lifters have been installed rotate the engine (2) complete revolutions.

11.) Now make your final lash adjustment settings. Again referring to **Fig. 1** set your valve lash to .003-intake and .004-exhaust. This is a basic setting and will work for most applications.

12.) After you have made your final lash settings you must torque the locknut to 180 inch-lbs (15ft lbs). “IF THIS IS NOT FOLLOWED THE LOCKNUT WILL LOOSEN AND DAMAGE YOUR NEW FOLLOWERS AND CAMSHAFT!”

13.) When torqueing the left hand followers and rockers you must support the side of the rocker / valve spring to prevent the rocker / valve stem tip from twisting. You can fabricate an aluminum block to do this **Fig. 3** or purchase one from us. You can also use a large screwdriver to prop against a head bolt to keep the follower from twisting.

14.) Do a final check on your lash and reset if necessary. Always remember to torque locknut to 180 inch-lbs (15ft lbs).

15.) Reassemble engine components as required.

16.) Start engine and listen for any unusual loud valvetrain noise. This system when adjusted correctly will be slightly louder than the stock valvetrain but will not be noticeably loud.

17.) You should make 2-3 runs on the engine initially and recheck valve lash and re- torque nuts. They will probably move slightly initially, this is considered normal.

18.) The frequency of adjustment will vary with application. Just pay attention to any unusual noise and reset as required.
